Church’s Rally Day Sept. 9 Part of New Community Celebration
Rock Island, Ill. – The Church of Peace in Rock Island, Ill., celebrates its church building’s centennial year with a special worship service with the theme “Gather at the River” for Rally Day on Sunday, September 9, 2012, at 10:30 a.m. Presenting a festival of hymns with the theme of “river,” the church’s choirs and instrumental ensembles perform and lead congregational singing in a variety of styles from jazz to gospel.
The day begins with complimentary breakfast served from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. and activities for children.
This special church service is part of the new community-wide celebration called East West Riverfest. The new East West Riverfest is a new ten-day celebration of the arts, culture and heritage offerings that thrive in the Quad Cities along the Mississippi River. The event’s name was chosen to reflect the fact that in the Quad Cities the Mississippi River flows east to west. From September 7 to 16, 2012, over 300 events will take place at over 60 various theaters, music venues, galleries, historic sites, parks, libraries, churches, and attractions on both sides of the river in the Quad Cities.

The Church of Peace United Church of Christ has been located in Rock Island since 1895. Founded by German immigrants, the church was originally called Deutsche Evangelicalische Friedens Gemeinde or German Evangelical Peace Church. In 1912, the congregation built the church at its current location on 12th Street and 12th Avenue. The church is involved in outreach efforts through its Book Nook, Summer Meal program, ESL Classes, Immigrant Cancer Education, Diapers for Jesus, and work camps.
