Work Camps
The Church of Peace UCC in Rock Island, Illinois, welcomes groups to Rock Island and the larger Quad Cities to help strengthen the neighborhoods in this area. Groups can spend four to six days rehabilitating housing and working at sites in low income areas. This program is designed for high school youth and college age persons. We can also accommodate intergenerational groups and adults.
The church works in conjunction with a community action agency called Project NOW, Habitat for Humanity, and other groups on restoring low income housing and rental properties, and/or refurbishing abandoned properties. Work camps stay in the air-conditioned parish house that is adjacent to the church. Kitchen, showers, bathrooms, and laundry facilities are available. The church provides an on site Work Camp Coordinator to make arrangements and assist each group.
Other possible activities include meeting neighborhood pastors, serving a meal at the church’s summer lunch program, another nutrition site, or visiting Arrowhead Boys Ranch. Or visit some attractions in the Quad Cities, such as going to the movies, water park, museum, or a minor league baseball game.
The adult/youth ratio required is 1 adult for every 5 youth. If you are bringing over 15 people, please contact the church about accommodations. The cost is $21 per person per day with an 8-person minimum limit. (We do not require 8 people to come, but cost is a minimum of 8 people.)
