Every year, Rock Island residents are nominated by their peers for what they do for the community. The nominees are narrowed down into eight different categories, in areas like business and education. This year’s fell in the organization category.
“Everyone at the church and everyone associated with the church deserves’ our thanks, and appreciation for all they have done and continue to do,” Charles Austin, III, 7th Ward Alderman.
For more than 100 years, Church of Peace has been at the corner of 12th Street and 12th Avenue. They have a number of outreach programs, including the food pantry and an english as a second language program, but their main mission is feeding the hungry. Just this past June, 27,000 meals were prepared and served, not counting the church’s other meal sites in the Quad Cities.
“Very proud of what we do, we don’t do it for recognition,” said Judy Patsch, Church of Peace member.
“Certainly feeding children is really the core of our faith beliefs, but also I think there’s some inspiration for them, how this might lead us into the future, and other efforts for outreach we might do,” said Mariah Marlin-Warfield, Pastor at the Church of Peace.
Church of Peace will serve as grand marshal of the Labor Day Parade in Rock Island.
