About Us
Church of Peace, United Church of Christ, was founded as Evangelical Friedens Gemeinde by German immigrants in 1895. Since we moved to our current location in the Longview neighborhood of Rock Island, Illinois, in 1912, we’ve been intimately involved with this dynamic community. Today, Church of Peace is a vital part of this neighborhood, providing worship services on Sunday morning and a variety of outreach programs for the community throughout the week.
The Church of Peace United Church of Christ gathers at the corner of 12th and 12th where we value our history and envision our future.
We give glory to God by our commitment to:
- promoting spiritual growth
- prayerfully seeking God’s will for our individual and community lives
- sharing worship and fellowship that stirs our souls and inspires our thinking
- attracting and sustaining young people
- serving those around us who are in need
- offering an ever-widening invitation and welcome
- embracing you warmly wherever you are on life’s journey
We’re the church that stands up for families, not just our own, but all families. We’re the church of literacy and education, and we’re the church of forgiveness. We’re the church of peacemaking in the face of hatred and bigotry, and we’re the church of caring and service.
Church of Peace Open and Affirming Covenant
We, the people of the Church of Peace United Church of Christ in Rock Island, Illinois, seek to be a community of Christians who celebrate and live in openness to the still-speaking God. We gather at the corner of 12th Street and 12th Avenue where we value our history and envision our future. As an Open and Affirming congregation, we recognize that all people are created equally in God’s image and all are beloved as God’s children. As we seek to offer an ever-widening welcome, we invite into our family all people, including persons of any age, race, national origin, faith background, marital status and family structure, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, mental and physical ability, economic and social status, and educational background. Jesus teaches us to welcome all God’s children. However the rest of the world describes you, and however you describe yourself, you will be welcomed and celebrated at Church of Peace.
