Fellowship
Adults and youth
have many opportunities for service, personal growth, and leadership at
the Church of Peace. There are many activities and ways to get involved
to enjoy one another’s company. Check out the Calendar of Events.
Some of the
committees to participate in are: Outreach, Education, Health &
Wellness, Building & Grounds, Memorials, and Worship/Music. Members can
serve on the Church Council. Other volunteer opportunities include:
choirs, youth group, Adult Social group, office work, gardening, Altar
Guild, ushering, and women’s circles. Read descriptions of the Parish
Nurse Program and the different circles below. Feel free to contact the
church office for more information on any of these groups or to
volunteer.
Parish Nurse
Ministry
The Parish Nurse Program interprets the relationship between faith and
health and incorporating spiritual values into health education. The
Health & Wellness Committee assists Mary Oelschlaeger, the church’s
Parish Nurse, with the health needs of the congregation and helping with
health/blood pressure screenings, blood drives, and other activities.
The Parish Nurse also makes home, hospital, and nursing home visits;
lends emotional support; guides individuals to community resources; and
leads a Caregivers Support Group. Mary O’s church office hours are
Monday and Wednesday from 9:00 am-3:00 pm.
Women’s Guild
The Women’s Guild has been at the church since its beginning.
Originally called the Ladies Aid, they supported the church in its
endeavors, by holding chicken dinners to raise money for the rose window
and bell for the bell tower. Every woman that is a member of the church
is a member of the Guild. The Women’s Guild meets on the first Thursday
of each month. Every other month is a potluck with a program and a
meeting. The other months are a cleaning day with a sack lunch. The
Women’s Guild hosts the funeral luncheons. The Guild also gives
monetary gifts to the church.
Filiae Pacis
Circle (Daughter of Peace)
This group evolved from a former all girls’ Sunday School class at the
church. Velma Talberg is the remaining charter member. They celebrated
their 70th anniversary on October 3, 2004. Meetings are the
first Monday of most months at 7 pm at the Hauberg Civic Center, Rock
Island. Activities include the Ash Wednesday supper, coffee hour
refreshments, spring basket raffle, and making hot/cold comfort packs.
Ida Krueger
Circle
The Ida Krueger Circle has been at the Church of Peace since 1950. The
members used to make "Teddy Bears" for the Argus Santa, bibs for Oak
Glenn rest home, and lap throws. Now the membership is only a few, but
we still make lap throws for shut-ins. The members meet on the second
Wednesday of the month at 10 am.
Martha Rolf
Circle
The Martha Rolf Circle was started in 1943 as an evening circle for the
young women of the church that were working. As the members got older
most have quit working, but it continues to meet in the evening. They
meet in the members’ homes on the second Tuesday of each month, with the
exception of July and August, and in December there is Christmas Party
at a local restaurant. The main money-making project is in November to
sell Christmas wreaths. The circle was named after the Pastor's wife
Martha Rolf.
Sarah Circle
The Sarah Circle was founded in 1950. In the early days the ladies cut
up old jeans and made strips of cloth to be made into rag rugs, place
mats and bags. As the years passed we lost the lady that made those
things, so it was decided to change the format. Now the members go out
to eat once a month on the third Tuesday at 11:30 am to a different
place each time. The fellowship is wonderful and there are seven active
members.
Tri Mu Circle
The Tri Mu Circle was founded on May 1, 1933. Tri Mu stands for the
three ‘M’s—mind, muscle, and morals. Their purpose is to improve and
enrich themselves mentally, morally, and physically. Their motto is:
live life more abundantly each day. They meet on the first Tuesday
evening of each month. One of the group’s biggest projects has been the
church’s Memorial Garden and its upkeep. One thing the members never
forget is laughter is important to everyone.
